ABS-CBN Mobile is ending its service due to losses

ABS-CBN Mobile is ending its service after suffering from huge financial losses of up to P560 million in 2017. This is the reason why ABS-CBN Convergence, the ABS-CBN network's mobile arm, did not renew its service this 2018 and decided to end the 5-year network sharing agreement with Globe, signed 2013. ABS-CBNmobile failed to achieve profitability despite star-studded marketing strategy. ABS-CBN Mobile currently has over 1 million subscribers.

All ABS-CBNmobile prepaid, postpaid, and SkyMobi subscribers will continue to enjoy text, call, and data services until November 30, 2018, approved by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

ABS-CBN and Globe are not done yet in exploring new ways and synergies that complement their business models. ABS-CBN will still continue its partnership with Globe Telecom in the digital TV field. The two companies will keep their connections by offering ABS-CBN TVplus box bundled with Globe at Home Prepaid WiFi, and making ABS-CBN TVplus' KBO (Kapamilya Box Office) and iWant TV over-the-top services available to all Globe subscribers.

Loading of prepaid SIMs via load card - Until October 22, 2018

Availing of prepaid promo SKUs via USSD (*128#) - Until October 22, 2018

Availing of prepaid SKUs via text conversion and availing of postpaid add-ons - Until October 24, 2018

Loading of prepaid SIMs via electronic load or AMAX - Until October 25, 2018

Availability of call, text, and internet services - Until November 30, 2018

End of all services - December 1, 2018 onward

History of ABS-CBN Mobile

ABS-CBN and Globe Telecom signed a network-sharing agreement on May 28, 2013 that allowed ABS-CBN to offer SMS, voice and data services using Globe Telecom network. The deal also enabled the two companies to share their assets and infrastructures such as frequencies, switches, servers, and transmitters.

Under the contract, ABS-CBN agreed to pay Globe for bandwidth costs and other technical and support expenses. This also leads to the sale of Bayan Telecommunications (Bayantel) to Globe under a debt purchase agreement.

The NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) approved the deal on June 8, 2013 and ABS-CBN Mobile was officially launched on November 16, 2013 during the "Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na" benefit concert of ABS-CBN for the Typhoon Haiyan victims at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Since then, ABS-CBN Mobile has partnered with several companies such as CloudFone, Huawei, O+ USA, KakaoTalk, Viber, Line, WeChat, WhatsApp, SM Supermalls, Walter Mart Philippines, 7-Eleven Philippines, Mini Stop Philippines, Vmobile, Telepreneur, ULoad, and Load Central, to improve its service offerings.

Despite heavy promotion by the ABS-CBN network's popular celebrities, ABS-CBN Mobile did not succeed to win mobile subscribers' heart, suffering massive financial losses every year of its operation. The company incurred a P700 million loss in 2015 and P600 million in 2016. Though the company's telecom services are defunct, it will still continue its partnership with Globe through its ABS-CBN TV plus bundled with Globe services.
